Musing Monday...Not Feeling the Love

Happy New Years, and what better way to start than with this weeks Musing Monday question from MizB...

  This week’s musing asks…

What is/are the first book(s) you’re reading for the new year?

Well, in this holiday week, between Christmas and New Years I have started three books and finished two, and I have to tell ya, I am not feeling the book love. One was just ok, one I skimmed just to finish and the third, Last Rituals by Yrsa Sigurdardittir, the one I am still reading now, may end up on my DNF..Did Not Finish...list.It is a murder mystery set in Iceland, which is maybe what first attracted me, but it is not living up to my hopes so far. I am about half way through it and debating it's future.

But....I hate to give up on a book.
I am not sure why, but it is hard for me. In theory, I support the idea that life is too short to waste on a book for are not loving, but in actuality, I find it hard. If it is an ARC or any book I received for review, yes I think it ones obligation to really give it your best try. But two of these, including the one I am reading not are not review copies. In fact, they are both from the library and I know the library folk could care less if I finish them. So what is the problem?

Maybe I hate to give up. Maybe I hate to see the time I already invested wasted. Maybe I am just too hopeful that it will get better. Maybe I am just foolish.
I am leaning forward the last one and thinking maybe that I should resolve to change in the New Year. Give a book a fair try, maybe 50 pages, maybe 75..and if I am not liking it, not feeling the book love, put it down and move on, guilt free.
Yes, that is what I am going to do.

Hey, did I tell you about my resolution to buy no new books in the new year but rather really start to work on that TBR pile?
Yesterday I went online and bought three books. Sure, I have a good excuse why I had to get each one...but really...less than a day?

  1. Great read! This one is definitely being added to my TBR list - thank you for sharing! Happy New Year! :)

  2. You outdid yourself! 3 in one day? Okay, so you had a little lapse but you really needed those particular 3. You can always start over besides today's Monday and you usually start new stuff on Mondays. Yep, that's the rule. Yesterday didn't even count.

  3. I have been interested in this author too, but have not read any of her books yet. The Iceland location is appealing to me. Don't know much about Iceland, other than volcanoes and cold.

As to your resolution. Well, I have the same one. It's a process. Maybe if it's just being more thoughtful about what we do buy. I usually end up going on kind of binges. I'm going to attempt to rein it in anyway. Good luck to you in that regard. ;-)

  4. the problem..as I no doubt will discuss in my review...is that Iceland plays little part except for those names I have no hope of pronouncing.

Kaye, you are right! I will start today. all resolutions start on Monday. Yesterday does not count!

  5. I'm currently reading Leeway Cottage by Beth Gutcheon. I like this author, and I'm enjoying this book. It is set in Maine, which for me is a plus. ☺

  8. I have a lot of trouble giving up on a book, too, and I'm not sure why. I've always been that way, though.

You crack me up with your new year's resolution. I quit making them because I never keep them anyway.

  9. Not realizing these books were a FREAKING SERIES, I read the second one "My Soul To Take". The book was OK, but was not inspired at all by the protagonist. She was pretty bland, and you are right, Iceland does not play a big enough part in the thing. This year, I am going to be doing a re-read of "Smilla's Sense of Snow", which is all about Iceland. We will see how it stands up after having read it years ago.

  10. I'm reading a book by a new author I've never read. I also 'thought' I would try not to buy new books for a while. I already have 4 books to be released in January 2012 on my wishlist.

You can find them on my "Book Lust Journal" blog

    Thanks for your visit today.

  11. I so know that feeling of hating to give up on a book. One one hand I know life is short so why waste on something you don't like? But... there's that other hand that makes me want to not give up on a book.

Anyway, I always have that resolution of not buying books and it never lasts, but 3 in one day? That was fast :)

  12. I'm torn between being giddy that its the 2nd and I'm still holding to my "no book purchases" resolution and despair because I this very book a few months back and it is in my pile.

  13. I understand your mixed emotions about giving up on a book you don't like. I'm more inclined to do that, though, than struggle through to the end. More power to you for hanging in there!

  14. Oh no! Last Rituals sounded really interesting and it's been on my To Read list for a while. :( How disappointing.

  15. Oh. I know how that feels! I had a horrible week where everything I picked up I ended up not liking it, not one bit. But it's all better now. It's a new year, and it has started with some pretty awesome reads. Hope you get some awesome reads soon ;) Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  16. Put the Iceland book aside and try it again later. Starting off the New Year with a struggle is NOT the way to go. Listen to Tutu...January is meant to be fun, and give you a sense of accomplishment, and provide some inspiration for the whole year. So gather bandit and Sammy and a good easy to read and enjoy!

  17. You are too funny! I don't like to give up on a book either...but sometimes...it just happens! I have so many TOB on my Kindle right now...but I keep right on shopping!! I don't make resolutions anymore either....never seemed to keep them! Happy New Year!!

  18. I don't like to give up on books, either. Putting them aside in case I might want to read them later works for me. Maybe that wouldn't work for a library book, though...

Beth mentioned Leeway Cottage, by Beth Gutcheon. I love that author...and that book!

Thanks for visiting my blog, Cait.

  19. Not a good way to start out the reading year! I have a hard time quitting a book too. I'm not sure why that is. It has to be really atrocious for me to give up on it.

Here's hoping the books get steadily better in 2012!

  20. I'm laughing at your last words. Great. great. great.
I'm a big believer in quitting books I don't like. You can't quit most things in life, but by gosh if you don't like a book, you can!!

  21. Hi Caite,

Some resolution that turned out to be LOL! Now you know why I don't even bother making a resolution!

I too hate to give up on a book and will slog on to the bitter end, even if it is pretty dire. I don't think there has been a book that I actually didn't finish, which is really sad and pathetic when you think of all the great books I could have been reading and enjoying!
