Weekend Cooking...Have I Got An App...And I Don't Mean Appetite.

A little while ago, I finally gave in and bought a 'smart' phone, a Droid Incredible. Yes, I understand that you can actually use it as a phone, but really it is all about the toys. The games, the internet, the Twitter...the APPS!

I need a compass and I certainly need a map of the stars and Mr. Bartender and several book readers..right?
Ok, maybe not all those things and a few dozen more. But I found one app that is really, really good and very useful, an app from Epicurious.
"25,000 delicious, professionally tested recipes from Bon Appetit, Gourmet, renowned chefs and cookbooks. E-mail recipes to friends, save favorites, and create shopping lists."

First of all, it is free! 25,000 recipe!
You can do a search by course, cuisine, dietary consideration, season or ingredients. As you page through, you can see how it has been reviewed, with one to four forks, and read the reviews. Usually, there is a picture. If you like the recipe, you can save it to your favorites, generate a shopping list or e-mail it. And turn the phone on it's side and you can see the step by step instructions to use in your kitchen.
Lucky I put that screen protector on the phone.

I had some fresh ginger on hand, so I went in search of a ginger recipe..ginger and chicken. Here is the one I picked..I think it sound delicious, but I will admit that sadly, I have not made it get. But I have the shopping list, right here on my phone!

Chicken with Lemon and Spices

Serve with basmati or regular white rice.
  • 4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 14 1/2-ounce can diced tomatoes in juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
Mix chicken, lemon juice and turmeric in medium bowl. Marinate 30 minutes.
Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, ginger and cumin seeds and sauté until onion is tender, about 5 minutes. Add chicken with marinade; sauté until most of marinade evaporates, about 3 minutes. Add tomatoes with juices, chili powder, salt and paprika. Cover; simmer 7 minutes. Uncover; simmer until chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens, about 8 minutes longer. Remove from heat. Mix in sour cream. Season with salt and pepper.

This is my contribution this to this week's Weekend Cooking.

  1. This recipe sounds great. I use the EPP App a lot on my iPad. I find it so much easier than trying new recipes using a cookbook and getting the pages all messy...LOL

  2. You didn't find it awkward cooking from that tiny screen? My sister sent me a link about another cooking app for my iPhone and figured the screen would be too small.

  3. Bibliophile, I agree, I hate to get the pages of a cookbook dirty!

No Kathy, especially when you go to the step by step view with the phone on the side, I find the font size great.
but if you see a recipe you like, you can always e-mail it to yourself and print it out of copy it to a recipe file on your computer, which I often do. I have looked at other apps, but this is my fav cooking one...so far.

  4. I'd have to use a magnifying glass to see it!

I'd like to have one though!

  5. Hi Caite,

I haven't been tempted by a reader yet, I just can't reconcile myself to abandoning all my books. The look, the smell, the feel of a physical book, just can't be replaced.

I can see how your recipe app. would be great when out shopping for ingredients, but to actually try to follow a recipe from that tiny screen, would be a nightmare, I should think.

They would also have to be food and liquid proof, before I could be let loose with one, and the idea of fiddling around printing off individual recipes kind of defeats the object for me

  6. Forgot all about the recipe.

It sounds delicious and is just the sort of food both myself and my husband love.

Nearly everything we cook has to have chillis added and chicken is more or less our staple diet, so I will be trying out your recipe for sure.

  9. Oh, I love ginger-I can smell it cooking. Hope you make it soon. It would be very efficient to have all those recipes at your fingertips.

  10. I am still at the stage where I am in awe of technology. The idea that I can get recipes and food tips on my phone astounds me. I like the sound of this chicken recipe.

  11. I find it astonishing too...which is maybe why I wrote this. I am easily impressed...lol

I really do not find the print that small, no harder to read than my computer screen really.

Fiction-books, I have not bought a dedicated reader either...but I am not beyond reading free books, mostly classics, on my phone using several readers. Great when you find yourself with some time on your hands out in the middle of nowhere. I have read a couple so far and I find their presence comforting...lol

  12. Mr. Jenners got an iPhone earlier this year and has become OBNOXIOUS with it. It is ALWAYS with him, and if I hear about one more app, I'm going to kick him in the shins. I feel like the iPhone is his mistress!
