Musing Monday...Feast or Famine.

 Wow! It is Monday again!
Be sure to check out some other posts at Should Be Reading...

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…
• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!

• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

Talk about feast or famine...
Last week I had that pile of books I received and this week I only got one.
But it is one I really wanted so that is just fine.
Not to mention all those many books in my TBR pile.

So the one, thanks to my friends at Amazon Vine, is The Bat by Jo Nesbo!
"Inspector Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad is dispatched to Sydney to observe a murder case.  Harry is free to offer assistance, but he has firm instructions to stay out of trouble. The victim is a twenty-three year old Norwegian woman who is a minor celebrity back home. Never one to sit on the sidelines, Harry befriends one of the lead detectives, and one of the witnesses, as he is drawn deeper into the case.  Together, they discover that this is only the latest in a string of unsolved murders, and the pattern points toward a psychopath working his way across the country. As they circle closer and closer to the killer, Harry begins to fear that no one is safe, least of all those investigating the case."
It is the first in the series, but only now being released in English.
Yes, that drives me nuts.

Yes, I think it is a really bad idea from the publisher or whatever idiot whoever made this decision.
I read recently, I believe in reference to this series, that when then started to translate the books, they decided the reader might not really been drawn into the series by the first one. What, unlike the original readers in the original language, who were?

It is not always important to read a series in order and I would agree that with this series it is not critical. But I think my opinion of the other books suffered from the jumping around.

Hey, I read a lot of books. Sometimes it is hard to keep all these series and their storylines straight. Being forced to read them out of order does not help and makes me just a trifle miffed.
Why, oh why publishers, do you do this?

Of course, it will not stop me from reading this one though!

  1. I've been curious about this author...and I like the sound of the blurb. But I agree that books should be released in ORDER.

Thanks for sharing...and here's MY MUSING MONDAYS POST

  2. That whole out of order thing drove me stark, raving NUTS with this series! Because with each book, something happened, somebody died, or whatever, and when you read them out of order, those events are spoiled. I really have no interest in reading this one frankly. I have "done" the series. I finished it (although Good Lord On His Throne I hear he is writing one more) and I have tried to tend to my wounds and get over it. Bottom line, whoever made the decision to translate these books in random order should be smacked.

    1. sadly, this is not the only author I have seen it happen with. Anne Holt, whose books I like, is another. I read her last book first, where the main character has undergone a HUGE change in her life and now the earlier ones are being released. I will read them but it is just so stupid!

  3. I'm with you - it makes absolutely no sense to translate the books out of order. Sure, a well written series can be read out of order but not everyone wants to. I wonder if it would affect the way something is translated as well. Oh well, I hope you love The Bat!

  5. Talk about convoluted thinking on the part of the publisher. Almost like saying the first one is so bad, there's no sense translating it.

  6. I've been wanting to read the series but waiting for the first one to come out. I'll have to pick it up. I couldn't read them out of order, plus my TBR is so big, I didn't mind the wait.

  8. I bought an historical fantasy, The Firebird by Susan Kearsley, and a mystery novel set in Brazil, Alone in the Crowd by Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza, translated into English.
