Weekend Cooking- Roll that Lobster! Right This Way...

one....
I love lobster. I love the texture, I love the delicate flavor, I even love the 'work' of eating it. I start with the little feelers, any little bits and pieces, then eat one of the claws, half the tail meat, the other claw and finish with the remaining tail meat. All you need is some melted butter and a pile of napkins.

When a whole lobster is not available, the next best thing is a lobster roll. I have had awful ones and I have had great ones and the one I had in Nantucket recently was right up there with the best.
What makes a great lobster roll? Well, lobster and a roll. Keep it simple.
The lobster should be fresh and tender, not overcooked. A little bit of mayo, maybe a squeeze of lemon, a tiny bit of finely chopped celery for crunch. The roll should be a New England style top-split hot dog roll, buttered and toasted. Add lobster to roll...done.

  1. Our best friends are from Boston, so once or twice a year they have a "New England seafood fest" at their house. Ipswich clams first, then lobster. Lots of butter (we go home covered in it). Lots of beer. It just doesn't get any better than that.

  2. I grew up in Maryland and used to feel that way about crabs. Now the whole idea of feelers and claws and all just doesn't appeal! I'm moe in favor of your magic ice cream! :--)

  3. We feasted on lobster in Maine a few weeks ago. They even have lobster roll on the menu at Arby's !! I didn't try it, but hubby did... he said it was pretty good.

  4. I never get my hands on enough lobster to get tired of it...feelers and all. Now crab, while I love it, is just too much work for what you get. I am happy to let others pick it for me.

I was amazed the first time I saw lobster rolls at McDonalds up north...and not half bad really. Not great like this one...but a LOT cheaper.

In fact, I'll call her now to have them already steamed and ready for me to pick up. Eat your heart out all you who don't live in Maine. sorry....couldn't resist!

  7. Wow, nteresting. To us lobster is the absolute luxury food, very expensive and exotic almost. The mere thought to go and get a lobster roll is absurd. I envy you for living in a place where this is so common.
    Lobster rolls at McDonalds? OMG!

  11. Great recipe! I think the best lobster I've had was in Maine, although Gloucester, MA has good lobster. But I'm thrilled because several months ago I found a great little place for lobster not far from here in Red Hook, Brooklyn.. I haven't been there in a while but now I've got the idea in my head....!

  13. My husband could eat lobster morning, noon, and night --- and when we lived on the east coast, I do believe he did more than once! These photos not only make me hungry, they bring back some wonderful memories.

  14. Sorry I didn't get here sooner; I've been out of town since Friday morning.

Every time I go to Miane, I spend half my time tasting lobster rolls (you know, to find out who makes the best one). Lunch or dinner or both -- perfect time for lobster.

  16. As a Mainer, may I share with you my favorite places for lobster rolls? Red's in Wiscasset and Two Lights Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth! Also, eat a whole lobster on a dock overlooking the lovely waters off of Five Islands at Five Islands Lobster Company -- a gorgeous view plus lobster so fresh it practically crawls up on your plate!
