National Lighthouse Day!

Posted by Picasa

Today, August 7th, is a very special day! It is National Lighthouse Day!

In 1789, the United States Congress approved the Federal Lighthouse Act for the “establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers” and in honor of the 200th anniversary of the act, in 1989, Congress designated August 7th to be forever celebrated as National Lighthouse Day.

From the website of one of my favorite local lights, the lovely Cape May Lighthouse, regarding this holiday...

"The purpose was to provide recognition for the important role which lighthouses played in the history of our country, and the values of safety, heroism, and American ingenuity which they represent...
The history they provide gives us the opportunity to step back in time and learn more about our country. The contributions they made to our society, from protecting our coasts to guiding our sailors, should continue to be appreciated and remembered."

  1. And in 1782 George Washington created the Purple Heart Award! Your lighthouse pics are gorgeous. How do you get them all lined up so nicely with a frame around them all? you are so darned clever. Thanks again for Frenchman's Creek. I finished it yesterday and truly enjoyed it. Alas, I am now back in the world of 2009.

  4. I should have taken a vacation day to be able to properly celebrate this very important day!

  5. I've never officially celebrated this holiday, but I probably should! I know the St. Marks Lighthouse, in north Florida, opens its doors on this day only. I would love to make it up there some year!

  6. yes you should!
because of limited resouces, events like this are often the only time the lights are open...and in NJ we have of course the Lighthouse Challenge in October which is another time there is access to a couple that are not often open.

  8. Very fun! I'm surprised I didn't hear about this locally... we're vacationing on the cape and we've had fun spotting lighthouses. My youngest is too young to climb many (several have 5 yr age restrictions), so we've contented ourselves with looking at them from the ground.

    Great photo collage!

  9. I love to climb them, and during the two days of last years NJ Lighthouse Challenge I did them all, in fact a couple I did more than once and figured it was a couple of thousand steps all together.

But it is still GREAT fun even when you can't. Many are not open or only opened on limited days, but they are still so pretty.

  10. Caite, Gorgeous collage! Someday I will visit the East Coast lights, I swear. They are all so beautiful.

Thanks for visiting me at My Friend Amy on Friday. I am blogging today about Point Montara, a lighthouse that has stood guard over both coasts!

  12. Oh Caite you posted beautiful pictures of lighthouses! I am ashamed as I forgot it was National Lighthouse Day! It should be at least a week!
I love the Lighthouse with the big front porch, I think the lighthouse is brick.

You are an honor to Lighthouses everywhere.
